ALAN COSIO, Philippines

Rainforest. acrylic on canvas. 120 x 120cm

Allan Cosio, one of Philippines’ most prodigious artists whose body of work, spans the disciplines of portraiture, abstraction, sculptural objects as well as the intervening interludes with theatre design.

Cosio’s signature, an inimitable trademark that merges impressionistic daubing and optical mixing of colours, until he arrives at a bracing and opaline illusion of substance and space, aureoles of light.

Images that have touched him – caused an exhalation of mood, or inspired joyous moments. The paintings pertain both to landscape abroad and the tropical environment of his own country, the Philippines.

Cosio’s abstractions of landscapes, though now veering edgily into poetic realism, provide us with the texture and temper of the seasons.  Gripped by the sensations of nature, man is reduced to a state of rapture.

After a well-received springtime 2003 exhibition in Budapest of his paintings on rainforests and blooms, Filipino artist Allan Cosio presents his latest show of works in this series. Cosio's fascination with nature as a subject started in the 1990s and continues to this day. He has recently produced 18 landscape paintings, all 4 feet x 6 feet in acrylic on canvas.

Cosio has worked in various artistic media and has been active in the Philippine art scene since 1975. He recently received from the French government the rank of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, an award recognizing persons who have distinguished themselves by their work in the arts and literature, or who have contributed to the promotion of French arts and letters. He has also received grants from the British Council and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation of New York. He is a past president of the Art Association of the Philippines and a City of Manila award for painting and sculpture.
