A graduate from the Stage painting Department of the Shanghai Academy of Dramatic Arts, You Si came to Australia for the first time in 1988.
You Si has studied Western painting techniques for many years but considers himself firmly rooted in Chinese Tradition. Indeed, You Si cites Taoist philosophy as an important inspiration in his work.
Working with modern ink and wash, You Si has created delicate and subtle images reminiscent of the most harmonious Song Dynasty paintings, while combining all the striking elements of abstract expressionism. In this way You Si has earned himself a reputation as one of a new breed of young painters who believe they have a duty to explore the world of Chinese painting. Indeed, You Si along with fellow artist Mi Qiu, has the distinction of being the first painter to mount a privately funded, unofficial exhibit at the ancient Astronomical Observatory in Beijing in January, 1986. Previously, all public exhibits had to have the approval and usually the sponsorship of government organisations such as the Chinese Association of Artists. Since this exhibition many other young artists have shown their work there.
You Si was invited by the Canberra School of Art to be a visiting artist in residence in the Printmaking workshop, 1988.
